Kidney Center Heidelberg to become part of Heidelberg University Hospital on January 1, 2025

For 50 years, the Kidney Center Heidelberg (Nierenzentrum Heidelberg e.V.), as a specialist nephrology hospital, has contributed to the medical care of people with acute and chronic kidney disease in Heidelberg and the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Throughout this time, the hospital has enjoyed an intensive and trusting relationship with Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD). Now the two instititions signed a contract for the integration of the specialist clinic into the UKHD as of January 1, 2025.

The Nierenzentrum Heidelberg e.V. will be incorporated into the Center for Internal Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital at the turn of the year. The contract for the integration has now been signed by the boards of directors of the Nierenzentrum and UKHD. The German Federal Cartel Office had previously approved this step under competition law in November 2023. A W3 professorship with a leadership role in nephrology at the Medical Faculty Heidelberg of Heidelberg University is to be established by mid-2025. The Kidney Center e.V provided generous financial support for this. Since 2005, the Specialist Clinic for Kidney Diseases has been operating on the Neuenheimer Feld campus, in the immediate vicinity of the Medical and Surgical Clinics. The hospital has so far been run by the Heidelberg Kidney Center Association. At the specialist clinic, around 180 employees care for approximately 2,000 inpatients and around 13,000 outpatients per year.

“Now we bring together what is ment to be a unit,” says Professor Dr. Markus Weigand, Deputy Medical Director of the UKHD. ”We are very pleased that nephrology will enrich the scientific and clinical medical portfolio of UKHD even more in the future. The distances in both the clinical routine and in administration will be shorter. Patients and employees will benefit from this.”

Professor Dr. Michael Boutros, Dean of the Medical Faculty Heidelberg of Heidelberg University emphasizes: “The goal is to further develop research and teaching in nephrology, both in basic research and in translation. Nephrology interacts with many other fields such as immunology, oncology and cardiology and will play a central role in many areas for innovations and new therapies.”

“The planning and implementation of the integration were carried out in close partnership and transparently,” says Professor Dr. Martin Zeier, Medical Director of the Kidney Center. ”We are very pleased to be able to offer our broad spectrum of diagnostics and therapies at our proven premises, but now under the umbrella of Heidelberg University Hospital. For our patients, the usual contact persons and procedures will remain in place.” For example, the Kidney Center has earned an excellent international reputation in the field of kidney transplantation, peritoneal dialysis, acute kidney injury, diabetic nephropathy and the role of the kidney in the development of high blood pressure.

“The last two and a half years have been very busy, but it has been worth the effort. We have managed to take all of the Kidney Center's employees with us on this journey, so that the Kidney Center's success story will continue under the umbrella of the UKHD,” said Eleonore Fritsch, Commercial Director of the Kidney Center and Managing Director of the Kidney Center e.V.

“We warmly welcome our new colleagues to the hospital,” says Katrin Erk, Chief Financial Officer at UKHD. ”We are very pleased that the highly qualified and dedicated staff of the Kidney Center will be joining our large team in the new year. By growing together, we are also ideally equipped in terms of medical strategy, administration and economics in connection with the new hospital legislation in Germany.”
