Innovative research tool for representations of people in the media at the didacta education fair

Christian Colmer Press & Public Relations
Fraunhofer-Institut für Digitale Medientechnologie IDMT

    Media literacy meets AI

The InsightPersona research tool takes media literacy in political education to the next level. The AI-based analysis software identifies faces and voices in large archives in seconds. With the help of a chatbot and a semantic search, the analyzed archive can be used for research purposes. In the intuitively designed dashboard, the results can be processed to answer further questions. Journalists, teachers, publishers, software providers and those working in political education can find out more about the Fraunhofer IDMT project at the didacta fair in Stuttgart from 11 to 15 February 2025.

06 February 2025. How about easily finding out which statements of the German Chancellor are shown in the media? What topics do representatives of the parties’ address across different channels? With just a few clicks, the InsightPersona research tool provides a systematic overview. The AI solution from the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT thus can support political education and learning of application-based media literacy and in a digital learning environment.

At the didacta education fair in Stuttgart, interested teachers, as well as those working in political education, journalists, software providers and publishers, can test the tool on site and learn about its application. Researchers from the Oldenburg Branch for Hearing, Speech and Audio Technology HSA will be presenting the solution at their own booth (Booth 3B60, Hall 3).

Meta-media literacy: Intuitive access to systematic trend analyses

The InsightPersona software solution enables people in media to be systematically analyzed according to their own keywords, gender or topic. The software uses AI-based algorithms to recognize faces and voices in extensive media archives in a matter of seconds. The results can be further processed into trend analyses and statistics in a user-friendly dashboard.

The application also offers the option of a semantic text search or a chatbot based on the archive data. In a search query, the meaning and context of the search words are taken into account.

“Our technology combines facial recognition and voice data, making it easier to recognize and find people in different databases”, emphasizes Christian Rollwage, Head of the Audio Signal Enhancement Group at Fraunhofer IDMT.

Use case: analyzing candidate representations during election campaigns

For example, students can use word clouds to analyze which topics the incumbent chancellor is focusing on in the current election campaign. How does Chancellor candidate Merz express himself and who is more excited in the TV reports? Are women or men more likely to have their say in the media? These and other questions about media content can be analyzed interactively with the tool. The level of excitement in the voice is visualized with the help of a colored marking of audio tracks. A green-colored audio track indicates that the person is speaking very calmly and composed. If the voice color is very excited, the display turns yellow or red.

InsightPersona is an excellent addition to the variety of methods used in political education through interactive and intuitive media analyses. The results support joint reflection and discussion with the aim of developing independent political judgement and action skills in dealing with the media.

Background: AI algorithms for face and speaker recognition

The AI algorithms for combined face and speaker recognition make it possible to quickly analyze large archives with many thousands of hours of material with regard to specific faces, voices, perceived genders (male, female) and the distinction between adults and children. The InsightPersona software solution can be run locally at the customer's premises (on-premises) or at a service provider (off-premises). The dashboard with its analysis modules and statistics can be customized by the Fraunhofer IDMT to suit the analysis requirements. Various licensing models are available for InsightPersona.

Test the tool in a demonstration and meet Paul Reuter and Christian Rollwage from Fraunhofer IDMT's Audio Signal Enhancement Group at stand 3B60 in hall 3 at didacta in Stuttgart from 11 - 15 February 2025. Our experts will be happy to discuss further questions about the research solutions and possible applications with you.
