Researchers from the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) have contributed to a pioneering paper published in the renowned journal The BMJ. The paper, titled "FUTURE-AI: International Consensus Guideline for Trustworthy and Deployable Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare", outlines the FUTURE-AI Framework, a guideline for the development and deployment of trustworthy AI tools in healthcare.
Successfully introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare requires patients, medical professionals, and healthcare organizations to build justified trust in the technology. Yet, clear and internationally recognized guidelines for developing, assessing, and implementing AI-based medical technologies have not been established.
To address this gap, the FUTURE-AI Consortium was established in 2021. It consists of 117 interdisciplinary experts from 50 countries across six continents, including specialists from AI, clinical research, biomedical ethics, and social sciences. Over two years, the consortium developed the FUTURE-AI guideline, defining 30 best practices that consider technical, clinical, ethical, and legal aspects. The resulting concept covers the entire lifecycle of AI in healthcare.
In addition to their latest findings from several research projects on AI in medicine, Fraunhofer HHI researchers contributed their expertise from various AI standardization committees, including the UN's Global Initiative AI for Health (International Telecommunication Union, World Health Organization, World Intellectual Property Organization). This initiative is shaping international standards to enable, facilitate, and implement AI in healthcare.
"To integrate AI into complex clinical settings, we need to establish international standards and conduct rigorous evaluations. Patients and healthcare professionals alike must be able to trust the technologies that guide diagnoses and treatments. Medical AI, therefore, should be not only technically and clinically sound but also ethical and transparent," explains Eva Weicken, Chief Medical Officer at Fraunhofer HHI.
Fraunhofer HHI is currently working on several projects and initiatives in the field of "Trustworthy AI" and AI in healthcare. The institute is contributing to a pan-European testing infrastructure for AI and robotics in healthcare through the TEF-Health project. It is also a member of several national and international initiatives focused on testing and certifying AI technologies, including collaborations with the TÜV Association and the German Federal Office for Information Security.
