This year’s 8th Lindau Nobel Meeting in Economic Sciences will kick off in a manner true to its mission: bring the generations together and discuss the pressing questions of our time in depth and based on science. For the opening panel on “Research and Innovation in a Tripolar World”, Nobel Laureates will be joined by political and industry leaders from the three globally dominant regions, such as Mario Draghi, who will contribute to the debate based on his recent report on the future of European competitiveness.
Around 20 Economics Laureates and several hundred Young Scientists representing 60 countries will be part of the audience at Lindau’s Inselhalle. Today’s invitation to the Young Scientists marks the culmination of a multi-stage selection process in cooperation with a global network of almost 100 Academic Partners. This sets the stage for the renowned gathering of the brightest scientific minds from the field of economics.
“Lindau is looking forward to hosting two Meetings in 2025. After #LINO25 focusing on chemistry, the economic scientists gathering in late August round off the multidisciplinary approach of the Lindau Meetings”, says Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Council. “Looking ahead, we will even have an interdisciplinary agenda in 2026 which also marks the 75th Lindau Nobel Anniversary Meeting.”
Key Themes and Highlights of the Programme
The Economics Meeting will explore global issues via further Panel Discussions: institutions and development in the competition of nations (as researched by the 2024 Economics Laureates); the stability of financial systems, and climate change are key themes on the agenda.
During Lectures and Agora Talks, Laureates will deliver presentations about their research, career, and personal life. Four Laureates will celebrate their Lindau premiere: Douglas W. Diamond (2022),
Philip H. Dybvig (2022), Guido W. Imbens (2021), and Simon H. Johnson, one of the 2024 recipients of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
The "Next Gen Science Sessions" offer a platform for a highly competitive selection of Young Scientists to present their own research. The Meeting Programme has been developed by Council Members Torsten Persson (Stockholm University/LSE) and Klaus Schmidt (University of Munich) along with their Lindau Scientific Co-Chair for Economics Antoinette Schoar (MIT Sloan).
Engaging Formats for Dialogue
Free expression and the exchange of ideas are key features of the “Open Exchanges” between Laureates and Young Scientists – a popular format of the Lindau Meetings on natural sciences that will be adopted for the first time during #LINOecon. Other session types that foster the interaction between the generations are the “Laureate Lunches” and “Science Walks”, which take place in small groups upon registration, as well as the traditional “Bavarian Evening”, where all participants celebrate the final dinner at the event venue Inselhalle.
The closing day traditionally includes the boat trip to and from Mainau Island. On the island, participants can look forward to a Panel Discussion between Nobel Laureates, Young Scientists, and distinguished representatives from society and politics on the topic of climate change. Finally, the Young Scientists will leave Lake Constance as new Lindau Alumni.

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings: Our Ambition and History
For over seventy years, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings have served as unique forum for exchange between Nobel Laureates and Young Scientists. Every summer, more than 600 of the world’s most talented Young Scientists and more than 30 Nobel Laureates are invited to spend a week in Lindau on the German side of Lake Constance, a week full of mutual inspiration and scientific encounters.
Since the first Meeting in 1951, more than 36,000 Young Scientists have participated in the Lindau Meetings – for many of them, it has been an experience that has changed their careers and lives, making them part of a unique international network of scientific excellence. Even after years and decades, they are still connected with each other and with the Lindau Meetings through the Lindau Alumni Network.
The original idea of the Meetings goes back to two physicians based in Lindau, Franz Karl Hein and Gustav Wilhelm Parade, as well as to Count Lennart Bernadotte af Wisborg, a member of the Swedish royal family who quickly became the spiritus rector of the Lindau Meetings. From the start, they saw the Meetings as a means to reconcile the peoples of post-war Europe, in particular, the younger generation. Lindau quickly developed into an international forum for the exchange of knowledge between nations, cultures, traditions, and disciplines.
