DataNord awards a three-month Residence Fellowship for Data Journalists

Merle El-Khatib Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
U Bremen Research Alliance e.V.

DataNord, Bremen's interdisciplinary data competence center, is offering a “Journalist in Residence Fellowship“ in spring 2025 for data journalists who deal with data-driven research in politics, society and business. The residency is aimed at staff and freelance data journalists from Germany and abroad who work with data analytics, open data or algorithmic decision-making processes, have knowledge of best practices in science communication and are looking for interdisciplinary exchange with researchers.

The goal is to promote independent, data-based journalism and to strengthen the interface between data science, journalism and society. The focus is on the transfer of data journalism skills, in particular media-appropriate science communication - i.e. the comprehensible, relevant and appealing presentation of scientific findings for the public: The chosen data journalist will share his/her expertise with researchers through DataNord's event formats and networks to improve the communication of scientific results. The residency offers journalists the opportunity to deepen their own data-driven research projects and to gain valuable insights into the data science and research landscape in Bremen.

As part of the DataNord Research Academy, method experts and domain experts work together in five collaborative projects to answer data science questions and embed data skills directly into the research process in various disciplines and institutions. The Research Academy plays a central role in training a new generation of data scientists and promoting a future-oriented data culture. In addition, the DataNord community offers a professional network with experts in science and technology. By interacting with researchers the data journalist gains insight into interdisciplinary research projects and analysis methods, takes the scientific perspective and can use data and research sources (e.g. research data repository PANGAEA for earth and environmental science data, Bremen State and University Library, etc.). It also offers the opportunity to experiment with innovative storytelling techniques and new data journalism tools.

The Residence Fellowship includes a stay up to 3 months (can be planned individually until the end of 2025) and financial support of up to 3,000 euros. The application period will run from March to April 15, 2025, with selection to take place by April 30, 2025. Via the application form the following documents can be submitted: (1) Project outline on the planned research topic and description of plans to share science communication skills with the Bremen research community (max. 1 page); (2) Short Curriculum vitae; (3) Letter of recommendation (optional). The application deadline is April 15, 2025.
