At its annual General Assembly, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities ALLEA (All European Academies) presented the Madame de Staël Prize to physicist Viola Priesemann. The award was announced in December 2024.
Viola Priesemann, who has been a member of 'Die Junge Akademie' since 2021 and is a member of the current Board, is being honoured with the prize for her scientific achievements in the field of physics, her leadership qualities and her strong commitment to European cooperation in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Her work reflects the very values embodied in the Prize – of promoting science as a global public good, facilitating scientific collaboration across borders and disciplines, and strengthening the impact of science in society,” said Paweł Rowiński, President of ALLEA and chair of the Madame de Staël Prize Jury.
About the award winner
Viola Priesemann is professor of Physics at Georg-August University and group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organisation in Göttingen. Her research focuses on living and artificial neural networks, working out the fundamental mechanisms of selforganisation, learning and efficient coding. At 'Die Junge Akademie', Viola Priesemann is committed to the topic of science communication, among other things, and in this context was largely responsible for the publication of a guide on science communication in autumn 2024.
