At the international workshop hosted by HTWK Leipzig, researchers will exchange insights on current legal topics related to construction – June 30 to July 3, 2025.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and its journal, the "Journal of Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution in Engineering and Construction" (LADR), invite attendees to an international workshop every two years, focusing on legal issues in the construction industry. After previous venues like Cairo, Hong Kong, and Honolulu, the conference will be held for the first time in Germany.
"We are delighted to host the 6th International LADR Workshop this year," says Klaus Holschemacher, Professor of Concrete Construction and Director of the Institute of Concrete Construction at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig). "HTWK Leipzig's expertise in international construction law and experience in organizing international events led to the invitation to host this year's workshop in Leipzig."
Approximately 90 scientists from around the world have registered for the conference. They are all experts in the fields of international construction law and construction management. At the LADR Workshop, they will exchange ideas on the latest developments at a high academic level, with a strong application focus, to enhance knowledge transfer within the academic community and to the construction industry and public authorities.
Program with Lectures and Keynotes
The two-day conference features presentations on topics such as litigation, damages, dispute resolution, risk management, contracts and conflicts, as well as digitization and sustainability in the construction sector. "For the first time, we are including topics like Building Information Modeling (BIM) and contract management to better reflect current scientific developments in construction and contract law," notes Ulrike Quapp, Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at HTWK Leipzig and Senior Editor of the LADR journal.
Distinguished guests are expected for the opening and keynotes on Tuesday, July 1, 2025: After a welcome and introduction by Professor Klaus Holschemacher, speeches will be given starting at 9:00 AM by Dirk Panter, Saxon State Minister for Economy, Labor, Energy, and Climate Protection; Lance VanDemark, Editor-in-Chief of the LADR journal; Courtney Mazzone, Consul from the U.S. Consulate General in Leipzig; and Professor Faouzi Derbel, Vice Rector for Research and Sustainability at HTWK Leipzig.
Two keynotes by renowned experts will follow: Dr.-Ing. Matthias Tietze (C3 – Carbon Concrete Composite Association) will provide an overview of the regulatory landscape for innovative construction methods in Germany using carbon concrete as an example. Sarah Kristina Merz (Deubim) will discuss norms and legal requirements in BIM projects. After the two full conference days with presentations on July 1 and 2, 2025, all participants will have the opportunity to explore the city of Leipzig on a cultural tour tracing the footsteps of Goethe's Faust.
Publication in LADR Special Issue
All presenters will also publish their latest findings in a special issue of the LADR journal. As a highly regarded specialist publication, the journal is well-ranked in scientific databases. This allows other professionals in construction law and management to continue their education afterward.
The LADR Workshop is sponsored by Seufert Rechtsanwälte law firm and the Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The American Society of Civil Engineers is one of the largest associations in the construction industry, advocating for sustainable infrastructure in the future.
