37th European Union Contest for Young Scientists brings international research talents to Kiel

The European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) will return to Germany for the first time since 1993, with Kiel University (CAU) set to host the 2026 edition. On Friday, 19 September, Project Manager for EUCYS at Kiel University Stefanie Altemark and Dr Jessica Bönsch, board member of the Stiftung Jugend forscht e. V., jointly accepted the symbolic handover of the event at this year's EUCYS contest in Riga. ''It fills me with pride and gratitude that Kiel University is the first German university in almost 30 years to take on the honour of hosting EUCYS,'' Altemark said. "This gives us the opportunity to welcome outstanding young international talent to Kiel University."

Since 1989, EUCYS has brought together the winners of the national STEM competitions for young talent – in Germany, this is "Jugend forscht" ("Youth researches") – from all over Europe and invited them to the annual contest. During the one-week event from 22 to 27 September 2026 in Kiel, participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and network – not only with each other, but also with leading European scientists. In doing so, the contest serves as a trailblazer for cutting-edge research, careers in innovation and scientific excellence.

"We are very excited to be part of this concept in 2026," continued Stefanie Altemark. "By hosting the contest and its accompanying programme here at Kiel University, we are sending a strong signal for diversity and inclusion in the STEM field: EUCYS brings together young researchers from a wide range of countries, disciplines and backgrounds, promotes intercultural networking and encourages participants to confidently face the challenges of modern research."

Dr Jessica Bönsch, Managing Director of the Stiftung Jugend forscht e. V., emphasised: "We are delighted to welcome Europe's best young researchers to Germany for EUCYS 2026. The contest makes an important contribution to discovering and promoting top young scientists who will take on social responsibility in the future and who dedicate themselves to driving innovative developments across national borders. I would like to thank the European Commission for its generous funding, which makes it possible for young STEM talents from all over Europe to present their ideas and projects at an international level at EUCYS."

EUCYS 2026 is being organised jointly by Kiel University and the Stiftung Jugend forscht e. V. as part of the EU-funded "Science Comes to Town" project.
