Karlshochschule Secures DAAD Funding for New “Latin America” Certificate Program

Karlshochschule International University

Through DAAD’s HAW.International, Karlshochschule International University will launch a “Latin America” certificate that strengthens its global profile—offering language courses, regional modules, study-abroad and internship options, co-supervised theses, and an online summer school with partner universities in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru.

Karlshochschule International University is receiving funding under the DAAD program HAW.International to establish the new certificate program “Latin America.” This will further expand the university’s long-standing international orientation and specifically deepen its academic ties with the Latin American region.

Since its founding, Karlshochschule has seen itself as an internationally networked and socially engaged university. Students from over 60 countries, English-taught Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, and close cooperation with partner universities worldwide shape its profile. The funded project builds on this development and broadens the international study offering with a new regional focus.

Bridge between Europe and Latin America

The “Latin America” certificate program combines academic teaching, research, and practice in an innovative way. In cooperation with universities in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru, students will in future acquire language, intercultural, and subject-specific competencies related to the region—summarized by the university under the term “intercultural & inclusive capabilities.”

“With the certificate, we want to offer students—who may not yet know whether they want to work for a company or a non-profit organization but who are enthusiastic about Latin America—the opportunity to work, for example, in Argentina, Mexico, or Costa Rica and become experts on a region. This intercultural competence will remain highly attractive to many internationally operating employers in the future,” says Prof. Dr. Dr. Björn Bohnenkamp, Vice President of Karlshochschule and Professor of Marketing, Media & Consumer Culture.

The program includes, among other things, language courses, subject-specific modules on economic and societal topics in Latin America, selected study-abroad semesters and internships, international theses with Latin American co-supervision, as well as a joint online summer school, “Entrepreneurship & Leadership,” with students and faculty from Germany and Latin America.

“A strategic step toward global networking”

“With the Latin America certificate program, we are placing a clear focus on a region that is becoming increasingly important for global collaboration, innovation, and social change,” explains Lisa Wiedeman, project lead at Karlshochschule. “The program exemplifies our commitment to approaching education internationally, interdisciplinarily, and with strong practical relevance—and to giving students the opportunity to develop perspectives beyond national borders.”

    About the HAW.International funding program

The DAAD program HAW.International, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), has been supporting the internationalization of universities of applied sciences since 2019. In the current funding round, 21 projects at German universities are being supported—including Karlshochschule International University. The goal is to expand international cooperation in teaching, research, and transfer, and to network practice-oriented formats worldwide.
