In cooperation with the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) plans to establish the Leibniz Centre of Agri-Food Economics Kyiv in Ukraine at the beginning of 2027. The center aims to advance research on the economic, social, and ecological challenges of Ukraine’s agri-food sector and its integration into the EU.
IAMO is strengthening its international presence and research capacities: With the approval of a small strategic expansion by the federal and state governments, the Leibniz Center of Agri-Food Economics Kyiv will be established.
“Ukraine is a key player in the global agri-food system. In light of the ongoing Russian war of aggression and the upcoming EU integration, there is an enormous need for research and policy advice,” explains Prof. Dr. Alfons Balmann, Director of IAMO. “With the new center, we are creating a unique platform for scientific analysis and knowledge transfer directly on site.”
The center will include two professorships in Kyiv in the fields of Agribusiness and European Integration, jointly appointed with KSE. The professorships are intended to conduct on-site research in Kyiv together with early-career researchers to strengthen international visibility and knowledge exchange. The structure will be complemented by a scientific coordination office at IAMO’s headquarters in Halle (Saale), Germany.
“We want to sustainably strengthen agri-economic research in Ukraine while expanding networking with European and international partners”, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Thomas Herzfeld, Director of IAMO. “The center will serve as a hub for science, policy, and business and provide the foundation for evidence-based decisions in a time of profound transformation.”
Funding for the project will be provided through a permanent increase in IAMO’s institutional funding starting in 2027. The annual total budget at full capacity will amount to around 886,000 euros, with IAMO contributing 177,000 euros from its own resources. The initiative aligns with the Leibniz Association’s strategic goals for knowledge transfer, internationalization, and early-career support.
About IAMO
The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyses economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transition regions of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO works to enhance the understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO studies the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyse strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its founding in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
