At the Digital GreenTalents Award Ceremony on November 25, 20 young scientists from around the world were recognized for their outstanding work at the intersection of digitalization and sustainability by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. All awardees will now embark on a research stay in Germany and attend a summer school organized by the German Informatics Society and the Project Management Agency Karlsruhe.
Berlin, 25. November 2025 | ‟Projects won't change the world, the only ones who can change the world are people.” This is how Dr. Rainer Müssner from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt, BMFTR) emphasized the Digital GreenTalent programme’s focus on empowering individual researchers as agents of global change. The Award Ceremony took place in Berlin, marking the second consecutive year of recognizing outstanding young international researchers at the intersection of digitalization and sustainability.
20 Digital Green Talents were announced during the ceremony, selected from a competitive pool of applicants for their innovative research contributions. The award recipients joined the ceremony from multiple time zones around the world, with participants calling in from very early morning in Canada and evening hours in the Philippines.

Alexander Bonde, Secretary General of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt and one of the five members of the jury, sent a video message directly from COP30 in Brazil: ‟To tackle climate change, we need solutions, we need political commitment but what we also need are young talents, scientists, entrepreneurs, professionals who are helping us to solve those problems that we have on our way to a sustainable future.”
Jury member Dr. Christiane Plociennik sent her message from DFKI’s Smart Factory Lab (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence), where she works as a senior researcher. She emphasized, ‟The amazing applications give me hope for our planet. If we set aside the research excellence, the projects shined through motivation, enthusiasm and innovative ideas.”
The award includes a comprehensive three-month research stay in Germany scheduled for 2026. A summer school will be hosted in June near Frankfurt am Main, offering interdisciplinary exchange among the cohort. What is new this time around: A mentoring programme will pair each Talent with experienced researchers and industry professionals, providing career guidance and fostering long-term professional relationships. The ceremony concluded with warm wishes extended to all 20 talents as they prepare to embark on their research journey in Germany.
About the programme
The German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) hosts the ‟Digital GreenTalents – High Potentials in Sustainable Development” Award to promote the international exchange of innovative green ideas at the intersection of digitalization and sustainable development. It focuses on how digitalization can promote greater sustainability in science and society. The German Informatics Society supports the implementation of the Digital GreenTech funding programme and of the Digital GreenTalents Award.
