Founding of a new University Vascular Medicine Clinic at UMM

Dr. Eva Maria Wellnitz Wissenschaftskommunikation der Medizinischen Fakultät
Universitätsmedizin Mannheim

Professor Konstantinos Stellos hast been appointed Director of the newly established VI. Department of Medicine at the Universitätsmedizin Mannheim

Heidelberg University has appointed Professor Dr Konstantinos Stellos to the newly created Chair (W3 Professorship) of Internal Medicine, with a focus on Angiology and Diabetology, at the Medical Faculty Mannheim. From 1 December 2025, he will also take on the role of Head of the newly established VI. Department of Medicine at the Universitätsmedizin Mannheim (UMM), which is dedicated to advancing vascular medicine with a strong diabetology focus.

The establishment of this new department marks a major milestone for vascular medicine in Mannheim. For the first time, UMM will host a university-based unit that integrates angiological expertise with an expanded focus on diabetes-related vascular complications.

Angiology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine dedicated to diagnosing and treating diseases of the arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. It plays a central role in developing next-generation medications, catheter-based interventions, and personalized therapies for conditions such as atherosclerosis, peripheral artery disease, thrombosis, inflammatory vascular disorders, as well as the vascular complications of diabetes.

Professor Stellos is now one of only five full university professors of Angiology in Germany, representing the field in its full breadth across research, teaching, and clinical care.

Professor Stellos, aged 44, is a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Angiology. He began his academic and clinical career nearly two decades ago at the University Hospitals of Tübingen and Frankfurt am Main, followed by a highly productive period at Newcastle University (UK) as Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine.

In 2021, he was appointed to the W3 Professorship of Cardiovascular Research at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University. Over the past four years, he has led the Department of Cardiovascular Research at the European Center for Angioscience (ECAS) while continuing to practice vascular medicine clinically.

Professor Stellos brings a unique profile spanning internal medicine, cardiology, vascular medicine, and translational research to UMM, thanks to his combined expertise. In his new role as Clinic Director, Professor Stellos will oversee comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for all vascular diseases, including advanced interventional therapies. The department will also provide specialized care for patients with diabetes mellitus and diabetes-related vascular and organ complications. Through his translational research approach and clinical expertise, Professor Stellos is expected to significantly strengthen UMM’s position in vascular medicine.

‘We are bringing together clinical excellence, state-of-the-art imaging, and cutting-edge basic science to develop innovative therapies for patients with vascular disease,’ says Professor Stellos. ‘Close collaboration with all partners involved in vascular research and treatment will be essential for our future success.’

Professor Stellos has achieved international visibility through his highly cited publications and leadership roles in several scientific societies. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Outstanding Achievement Award of the European Society of Cardiology – one of the most prestigious global honours for groundbreaking contributions to cardiovascular research.

His research group focuses particularly on the molecular mechanisms of angiometabolic diseases – conditions in which metabolic disorders lead to severe vascular and organ damage. The team uses advanced RNA profiling techniques, state-of-the-art vascular imaging, and clinical-translational research to reveal previously unknown disease processes and identify residual individual risk profiles in patients with vascular disease.
