Continuity and a breath of fresh air: New DZIF Executive Board elected

Five outstanding researchers were elected to the Executive Board at the general meeting of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF). Prof. Dirk Busch, Prof. Andreas Peschel, and Prof. Thomas Pietschmann were confirmed in office. Prof. Marylyn Addo and Prof. Susanne Herold were newly elected to the board. Current board members Prof. Hans-Georg Kräusslich and Prof. Maura Dandri did not seek reelection.

“I am very pleased to be able to continue my work on the DZIF board,” said Prof. Dirk Busch, Director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He was confirmed in his position as Chairman of the Executive Board by the General Assembly on November 25, 2025. “And I am even more delighted to be working with my old and new colleagues on the Executive Board. I would like to congratulate everyone on their election,” said Prof. Busch.

Prof. Busch has been involved with the DZIF since its founding phase. He was coordinator of the DZIF site München and the research area “Infections of the Immunocompromised Host” for many years, and then served as deputy chairman of the Executive Board for three years before taking over as chairman in 2022. “I see the tasks of the chairman of the Executive Board as those of a team player,” Prof. Busch emphasized. During his term, he plans to further expand and consolidate the DZIF's orientation.

Prof. Marylyn Addo is Director of the Institute for Infection Research and Vaccine Development at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and Head of the Infectious Diseases Section at the UKE's Center for Internal Medicine. As the new Deputy Chair, she brings many years of DZIF experience to the Executive Board. She was appointed as the first DZIF professor in 2013 and served as the spokesperson for the Hamburg-Lübeck-Borstel-Riems site for three years. Since 2022, she has been coordinating the research area “Emerging Infections.” “My scientific and clinical career has been shaped by international experience and a close link between basic research, clinical work, and translational implementation,” Prof. Addo explained. “I am very pleased that I can now contribute all this experience to my work on the DZIF Executive Board.” One of her focuses is promoting young infection researchers.

Prof. Susanne Herold was also newly elected to the Executive Board. The professor of internal medicine, infectiology, and experimental pneumology at the University Medical Center Giessen and Marburg is deputy spokesperson for the DZIF site Giessen-Marburg-Langen, a member of the DZIF's Internal Advisory Board, and active in the research area “Emerging Infectious Diseases.” “The DZIF's mission of translating basic scientific findings into concrete solutions for infectious diseases aligns well with my research interests and commitment to furthering this mission,” said the DZIF professor. As a member of numerous national science policy committees, the scientist has gained a wealth of experience in the strategic development and networking of research structures. “On the DZIF Executive Board, I would like to use this experience to actively address the central challenges of infectious medicine,” Prof. Herold emphasized.

Prof. Andreas Peschel, Chair of Infection Biology at the Interfaculty Institute for Microbiology and Infection Medicine at Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen, has shaped the DZIF since its foundation and has been reappointed to the Executive Board. “In the coming years, it will be crucial to further improve the balance between different requirements—while at the same time promoting young scientists and intensifying dialogue with society, politics, and industry,” said Prof. Peschel. “I see it as a privilege and an opportunity to actively shape this development.”

Prof. Thomas Pietschmann, Scientific Co-Director of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), was also re-elected. He has been a member of the DZIF Executive Board since 2023 and has held various DZIF roles for many years. He has served as spokesperson for the DZIF site in Hannover-Braunschweig since 2019 and as a member of the DZIF's Internal Advisory Board, among other roles. “The trusting cooperation between the DZIF and the HZI, which has grown over many years, is very important to me,” says Thomas Pietschmann. “I will work to develop new synergies and collaborations between our institutions and look forward to advancing translational infection research at the DZIF.”

With the election of the new Executive Board, the DZIF is signaling a commitment to new impetus and continuity in the further development of translational infection research. The new DZIF Executive Board will take up its duties on January 1, 2026. Current Executive Board members Prof. Hans-Georg Kräusslich and Prof. Maura Dandri did not stand for reelection. Prof. Busch thanked them both on behalf of the Executive Board: “Together, we have achieved and initiated a great deal for the DZIF. Thank you very much for the excellent cooperation!”
