GFFA expert panel on sustainable water use and food security in China

Daniela Schimming Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für Agrarentwicklung in Transformationsökonomien (IAMO)

Within the framework of the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA), IAMO in cooperation with the Sino-German Agricultural Centre (DCZ) organises a panel discussion entitled “Water, Food & Climate: Lessons from Sino-German Cooperation” on 16 January 2026 in Berlin, Germany.

China’s agricultural production relies heavily on irrigation, but uneven rainfall patterns and climate change are intensifying water scarcity - threatening food security and heightening competition over limited water resources. This panel brings together experts from Germany and China to explore how efficient irrigation systems and improved water management can strengthen water security and climate resilience in agriculture.

Drawing on experiences from Sino-German cooperation as well as state-of-the-art scientific research - from climate impact modelling to water-saving irrigation technologies and water reuse - the session highlights practical solutions relevant not only for China’s arid northern regions, but also for farming areas in Germany increasingly affected by water stress.

    About GFFA

The 18th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) entitled “Water. Harvests. Our Future” will be held from 14 to 17 January 2026 in Berlin, Germany. The GFFA is an international conference on agri-food policy issues. It is organised by the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) in cooperation with the Messe Berlin GmbH.

    About IAMO

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyses economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transition regions of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO works to enhance the understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO studies the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyse strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its founding in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
