On 18 March 2026, the Senate and the University Council at the University of Freiburg re-elected Prof. Dr Kerstin Krieglstein as Rector. Her second term begins on 1 October 2026 and ends on 30 September 2032. During that period, Krieglstein will focus on the implementation of the Future Agenda ‘UFR 2040’.
“I would like to warmly thank both bodies for their trust,” says Krieglstein. “Over the past few years, we have worked intensively on how to further develop our university and what role we wish to play in society. I am very much looking forward to the task of realising this vision together.”
Krieglstein also addressed a recent criminal offense committed by a former employee, which has also affected female staff members and female students at the University of Freiburg. The women were subjected to sexual violence through covert video recordings, also on campus. “Like many people in our university community, I am deeply shaken by this case. We will carefully review the way the institution has handled the matter to date, drawing on external expertise. At the same time, we are doing everything we can to further strengthen protection against sexualized violence and abuse of power and to expand structures that provide reliable support to those affected, so that all members of our campus community can feel safe.“
The Chair of the University Council and the Selection Committee, Prof. Dr Holger Reinecke, emphasises, “During her first term of office, Kerstin Krieglstein initiated a holistic strategic process and, together with many stakeholders, set the University of Freiburg on a clear course for the future. We are convinced that she is the right person to continue along this path with determination and to successfully implement the next steps in the University’s development.”
Kerstin Krieglstein has been shaping and guiding the development of the University of Freiburg for almost 20 years in various roles – as a professor, dean and rector. During her first term of office, she launched a comprehensive participatory strategic process, which gave rise to the Future Agenda UFR 2040. It sets the direction for the University’s long-term development and simultaneously forms the foundation for the University of Freiburg’s application to the Excellence Strategy, entitled “Future Research University – Sparking Change That Matters”.
Building on the Future Agenda, the University has taken significant steps in recent years. It has further developed its research profile in order to strengthen its international visibility and competitiveness in the long term. The 4D project – 4 Dimensions of Digital and Didactic Development – drove forward the digital transformation of university teaching and established new digital teaching and learning formats. Together with partners, the University also founded the Sustainability Innovation Campus to support the transfer of scientific findings into social and economic applications. At the same time, it developed university-wide leadership guidelines that provide guidance on good leadership and promote a cooperative, appreciative and responsible university culture.
In her second term of office, Krieglstein intends to implement these plans consistently. Yet profound changes are shaping the framework conditions for academia and society: rapid technological change, social, economic and ecological transformations, as well as a partly waning trust in public institutions and academia. “If we want to secure trust and strengthen our social legitimacy, universities must continually redefine their role and link their research, teaching and knowledge transfer even more closely to the major challenges of our time,” says Krieglstein.
The Rector emphasises that the University of Freiburg’s strategic direction takes these developments into account. It aims to link academic knowledge even more closely with social responsibility and to provide guidance in times of change. This involves conducting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research into the major questions of our time, further expanding international cooperation with the aim of academic freedom and knowledge security, and preparing students for the challenges of an increasingly complex world through new, cross-disciplinary development opportunities.
