International Conference on Optical Sensing and Biophotonics in Jena

    From single molecules to wearables: Europt(r)ode 2026 highlights the path from optical sensing to real-world applications.

    From March 29 to April 1, 2026, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology hosted the international Europt(r)ode conference in Jena, Germany. More than 200 researchers from 25 countries—from Brazil and the United States to Australia—gathered at the Volkshaus Jena to discuss the latest developments in optical chemical and biochemical sensing.

    The scientific program reflected the full breadth of modern sensor research, spanning fundamental photonic concepts as well as integrated, application-oriented system solutions. Key topics included single-molecule detection methods, plasmonic and quantum-based sensing approaches, miniaturized and implantable sensor systems, as well as AI-supported data analysis and multimodal imaging.

    A central theme of the conference was the increasing translation of optical sensing—that is, the transfer of scientific insights into practical applications—toward robust systems capable of operating reliably in real-world environments. Emerging approaches range from the direct detection of individual molecules in complex samples to wearable and implantable sensor technologies for medical use.

    For example, researchers presented AI-assisted spectroscopic methods for analyzing complex datasets, alongside label-free Raman microspectroscopy techniques that provide insights into cellular processes. Other contributions demonstrated how highly integrated sensor systems combine sample preparation, optical detection, and data-driven analysis into continuous analytical workflows.

    As host and key contributor, Leibniz IPHT played a major role in shaping the scientific program and presented, among other topics, research on ultrafast Raman-based tissue diagnostics, multimodal imaging techniques, and nanoscale sensor platforms.

    Europt(r)ode brings together experts from physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering, fostering interdisciplinary exchange in a rapidly evolving field. The conference, previously held in Birmingham, Warsaw, and Naples, continues to attract growing international participation, underscoring the increasing importance of optical sensing for applications in medicine, environmental analysis, and industrial process monitoring.

    In addition to several high-profile plenary lectures, participants presented their latest findings in oral presentations and poster sessions.

    Many international attendees were also impressed by Jena itself. Known as the “City of Light,” Jena represents a unique combination of scientific tradition and modern innovation. Building on the legacy of Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe, and Otto Schott, the city has developed into a globally visible “Optical Valley,” where research, industry, and spin-offs collaborate closely.
