University of Bremen Launches New "Business Model Innovation" Microdegree for Professionals and Students

This October, the University of Bremen is launching a new continuing-education format: the "Business Model Innovation" microdegree. The program responds to the growing demand for innovation skills with a practice-oriented, research-based curriculum.

The microdegree is designed for working professionals holding a university degree worth at least 180 credit points, as well as for University of Bremen master's students. Applications for the winter semester are due by September 15, and for the summer semester by March 15. Professionals pay an introductory price of 2,400 euros, which covers all tuition and examination fees for the full 24 credit points.

The Chair in Small Business & Entrepreneurship (LEMEX), led by Prof. Dr. Jörg Freiling, developed the program together with Prof. Dr. Tobias Röth, head of the Technology and Innovation research group in the Faculty of Business Studies & Economics, and the University of Bremen's Academy of Continuing Education.

    Making Innovation the Norm

"Our goal isn't to make 'business as usual' more professional - it's to make 'innovation as usual' the norm in companies," states Professor Jörg Freiling. "The key is moving back and forth between campus and workplace. That's what generates new perspectives on complex challenges."

That's exactly where the new program comes in. Specialists, managers, innovation managers, and employees from strategy, business development, transformation, and sustainability roles learn alongside University of Bremen master's students. Working in small, interdisciplinary teams, they tackle real questions drawn from companies and the region's start-up ecosystem, supported by mentoring from teaching staff and outside experts.

"In this microdegree, participants don't just work in a theoretical manner. They tackle real questions and forward-looking topics. The goal is to develop ideas without constraints, test them, and refine them through validation," explains Professor Tobias Röth.

    Flexible Study, Direct Application

The microdegree follows a modular structure, totaling 24 credit points that students can complete over one to four semesters, depending on their schedule. Students can start in either the winter or summer semester. Most sessions take place in person at the University of Bremen, supplemented by online sessions and self-directed learning phases.

Across up to four modules, participants build skills in analyzing and systematically developing business models, applying open-innovation approaches, and turning concepts into concrete business cases and implementation strategies. They test research-based methods in real projects and through exchange with a strong professional network.

"Graduates of the microdegree qualify for roles in innovation management, strategy development, business development, sustainability and transformation projects, as well as for founding start-ups and new ventures," says Berit Godbersen of the Academy of Continuing Education, who handles admissions and support for continuing-education students.

Responding to Social and Technological Change

The new microdegree also responds to sweeping technological shifts, including artificial intelligence, which is fundamentally reshaping many industries. "In their day-to-day operations, many companies have only limited resources to pursue innovation processes systematically," Freiling explains. "That's exactly where our chair comes in: students and companies often work together on concrete questions, develop new perspectives on existing business models, and test solutions with direct real-world application."
