The 2021 CHE University Ranking published today, in its nationwide comparison, shows that students who choose the University of Bayreuth after graduating from high school receive outstanding support here when starting their studies. In the subjects of biochemistry, biology/biosciences, chemistry, geography, earth sciences, physics, mathematics, computer science, and sport science, the University of Bayreuth has achieved top rankings for its comprehensive service to students transitioning from school to university.
"As a smaller university that focuses on the principle of quality over quantity, we offer our students individual support from the first semester onwards, familiarising them not only with the subject-related aspects of their degree programmes, but also with the services offered on our university campus. From the very beginning, we encourage them to develop their own study interests, and to set individual focal points with regard to future career fields. This applies all the more in view of the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic with its restrictions on face-to-face teaching and conversational contact on campus," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, President of the University of Bayreuth.
The services for first-year students include, for example, courses accompanying their studies that bring all participants up to the level of knowledge expected in a given degree programme. Professors and senior students support newcomers in starting their studies and help them set up individual study plans. The didactic competence of teaching staff is rated highly by Bayreuth students, as the ranking shows. In chemistry, for example, they award top marks for the teaching of subject-specific and methodological skills. Meanwhile, study organisation in Bayreuth, which receives top rankings in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, promotes efficiency and enables students to get to know each other personally from their very first semester. Moreover, in a nationwide comparison, an above-average number of students say that the courses are well coordinated, and that the number of participants is appropriate.
At the top in Germany: Sport Science in Bayreuth
Bayreuth's top performer in this year's CHE ranking is Sport Science. It receives top ratings not only for the supervision and support of students, but also for the range of courses offered, the organisation of studies, scientific relevance, its services with regard to career orientation, and support in studying abroad. Its IT equipment, the library, and the sports facilities on campus constitute excellent infrastructure. Students therefore also give top ratings for the general study conditions.
"In Sport Science, we have developed an interdisciplinarily networked study programme, here in Bayreuth, which is in many respects unique in Germany and closely interlinks research and practice. Moreover, the close, excellent cooperation between the faculties on the Bayreuth campus has proven its worth. Current topics from economics, technology, ecology, medicine, and the health sciences are all integrated into the sport science programme our students enjoy, who in so doing gain first-rate opportunities on the job market. Today, graduates of our university hold responsible positions in numerous areas of sport," says Prof. Dr. Markus Kurscheidt, Managing Director of the Department of Sport Science at the University of Bayreuth. Furthermore, doors are always open for young academics to pursue an academic career. In the ranking, which places the number of doctorates in relation to the number of professors, Bayreuth’s Sport Science is at the top nationwide.
Top rankings in Geography and Earth Sciences
The University of Bayreuth also receives a series of top ratings in the subjects of geography and earth sciences. Students award top marks for general study conditions, study organisation, and IT infrastructure. In almost all criteria for the quality of the teaching offered, the ratings are well above the national average, and the excursions and laboratory practicals integrated into the study programme are also highly rated. Students appreciate the good atmosphere on campus, and the willingness of lecturers to listen to criticism and suggestions from their students.
With interdisciplinary study programmes in Geography and the Earth Sciences, the University is a pioneer nationwide. "In Bayreuth, we teach our students scientific competencies and practical skills that enable them to work on solving crucial questions for the future. We therefore seek to familiarise them with current research questions right from their very first semester - especially on topics such as environmental change, renewable energies, nature conservation, urban and regional development, migration, international cooperation, and globalisation. In doing so, social and natural science perspectives are always related to each other in order to highlight the interrelationships between society and the environment," says Prof. Dr Martin Doevenspeck, Executive Director of the Department of Geography at the University of Bayreuth.
Prof. Dr. Stefan Peiffer, Director of the Bayreuth Centre of Ecology & Environmental Research (BayCEER), explains: "With its study programmes in the field of geoecology, an interdisciplinary environmental science, the University of Bayreuth is setting standards nationwide. The focus of the course is on natural ecosystems, especially lakes, forests, and grasslands, but also anthropogenic ecosystems, such as fields, industrial wastelands, or landfills, and the biological, chemical, and physical processes involved. Our students learn to participate in the development of far-sighted strategies to solve environmental problems, not least in view of the challenges posed by global climate change."
