From July 3 to 8, 2022, the University of Bremen will host the 15th World Coral Reef Conference. More than 1,000 participants from over 80 countries will convene in Bremen to discuss the latest results and developments in research. Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the press conference and all related events.
The World Coral Reef Conference – International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) – is the world’s premier event on coral reefs. Focal points of the 15th edition of ICRS 2022 are the major threats facing coral reefs and possible solutions to secure the future of these ecosystems.
Monday, July 4, 2022: Opening Ceremony with Federal Minister for the Environment Steffi Lemke
The opening ceremony of the ICRS will take place on Monday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the Hansesaal of the Congress Centrum Bremen (CCB), and will begin with a performance, put together especially for this event, by Bremen-based artist group Stelzen-Art.

• Dr. Claudia Schilling, Bremen’s Senator for Science and Ports

• Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, President of the University of Bremen
• Professor Christian Wild, Chair of the Coral Reef Symposium, and his organizing team
The opening event will be moderated by Anneke ter Veen.

Toward the end of the opening ceremony, Professor Nancy Knowlton will be awarded the prestigious Darwin Medal of the International Coral Reef Society and will deliver the first plenary lecture of the 15th edition of the ICRS, which will conclude at approximately 10:30 a.m. Afterwards, Prince Albert II of Monaco will welcome all participants of this first European World Coral Reef Conference with a short speech.
Monday, July 4, 2022: Press Conferences in German and English
The press conference in German will be held on Monday, July 4, from 9:50 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Roselius room of the Congress Centrum Bremen (CCB). Accreditation is sufficient for participation.

Tuesday, July 5, 2022: The Science-to-Policy Dialogue
The 15th ICRS 2022 is not just about current and future threats. An important goal of the symposium is to find solutions to the coral reef crisis. The Science-to-Policy Dialogue on Tuesday, July 5, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., will focus on measures to save coral reefs as our most important marine ecosystems.
The 15th ICRS 2022 plays a particularly important role in this regard. Numerous scientific papers explore possible solutions to provide policymakers, business leaders, and civil society with well-founded scientific information that they can use as a means for action. The event in English will take place in the Hansesaal of the Congress Centrum Bremen (CCB) as part of the Solutions Day. Accreditation is sufficient for participation.
Friday, July 8, 2022: Closing Ceremony
The World Coral Reef Conference will conclude on July 8, with a closing ceremony in English from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., to be held in the Hansesaal of the Congress Centrum Bremen (CCB). Participants will include Bremen’s Senator for the Environment Dr. Maike Schäfer. Accreditation is sufficient for participation.
Interview Opportunities:
Appointments for sound bites or interviews outside the press conference are also possible. For example, on Friday, July 1, there will be an all-day opportunity to make an appointment to visit the department of Marine Ecology (UFT building on the university campus) led by ICRS head Professor Christian Wild of the University of Bremen. Visits to the laboratories and discussions with students are also possible. Additional appointments on other days can be arranged as well.

You will receive your name badge, which you will need to enter the exhibition halls, on-site at the press counter, which has been set up for you by our cooperation partner, the Bremen Convention Bureau (BCB) of the economic development agency Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen (WFB). The press counter is located at the entrance to ICRS 2022 in Hall 4.
