This year, within the German federal and state governments' Excellence Initiative, the IAS established by the Technische Universität München is launching a series of symposiums on topics connected with gender and diversity named after Liesel Beckmann, the first female professor appointed to TU München. On an annual rotation, we will invite experts from different specialist fields to Munich to hold talks on various aspects of this theme, geared to the requirements of a technical university.
This year's conference focuses on the Technical Culture, where traditionally male dominated issues have long since found their way into an emancipated gender awareness. Gender competence is not only an important qualification for students' future career prospects but is also an important asset for the university's executive staff. In technical departments the subject-matter extends far beyond the aspect of equal opportunities for women: whereas in the past hardly a thought was spared for gender specific product development, merchandise specifically customised to women's needs is now commonplace. Which advancements in the automotive industry, for example, can be attributed to the fact that most decisions on the choice of car are made by women? And how do mixed teams need to operate in order to be more successful than research groups traditionally composed of men only? On day 2, following the talks on these and similar topics, you can join in discussion groups with the experts as part of a small workshop project.
