The International Centre for Fertilizers (CIEC) dedicated its 14th World Fertilizer Congress (WFC), which was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from January 22-27 to the subject "Fertilizers and Fertilization - Stewardship for Food Security, Food Quality, Environment and Nature Conservation". CIEC was founded 1933 in Rome as an NGO (Non Governmental Organization) and is the eldest scientific association solemnly dedicated to research on fertilizers and fertilization. CIEC organizes its World Fertilizer Conferences every four years. About 700 scientists from all over the world followed this year Thailand's invitation to come to Chiang Mai. The Land Development Department (LDD) of Thailand, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Agriculture, was responsible for the organization of the 14th WFC (photo 1).
Scientists from 32 nations presented in nearly 200 well-selected contributions results of their research in soil fertility and mineral nutrition of crop plants. Two third of the contributions originated from Thailand, Germany, Italy, Iran, China and Hungary. The fact was remarkable that traditional topics as for instance diagnosis of nutrient disorders and decision making rules for fertilizer dose and form accounted only for a quarter of all presentations at the 14th WFC. In contrast, three quarters of all presentations addressed nutritional problems of organically managed soils, relationships between nutrient supply and crop quality, and the recycling of nutrients from waste products. The technical exhibition accompanying the 14th WFC was an exemplary demonstration of Thai people taking responsibility for agricultural production. Here, the visitors could see how the Thai people realize stewardship for the protection, maintenance and enhancement of the rural environment. Numerous small Thai manufacturers provided with their expositions a deep insight in creativity and performance to offer local farmers high quality fertilizer products based on the resources of the own country. This is exceptional as usually such exhibitions are a road show of big international fertilizer companies. The 14th WFC indicated a clear change of the science community towards implementation of sustainability and thus realization of stewardship for food security, food quality, environment and nature conservation. International events such as the 14th WFC are not only a platform for scientific exchange, but also a time for making friends to share with scientific ideas for the benefit of future co-operations. Here, the indescribable and proverbial hospitality of the Thai people provided a perfect ambience so that the 14th WFC has become an unforgettable event for all participants (photo 2).
