The Climate Change Conference in Paris has an ambitious goal: for the first time, a fair and contemporary climate mitigation agreement is to be negotiated that will signal a global commitment to climate mitigation goals. Climate research findings make such a decision more urgent than ever: global warming is accelerating, and its main driving force is humankind. For this reason, the German Federal Research Ministry (BMBF) is promoting international climate research projects with a focus on cooperation between scientists, decision makers and the people affected locally. The current edition of Outlook Earth “Climate Change: Time to Act” presents exemplary projects.
The Climate Conference in Paris (COP21)
The 21st Climate Conference in Paris will mark a major turning point in the fight against climate change. In addition to climate mitigation measures, adaptation to climate change and financial aspects of the transfer of technology and capacity building will also be topics at the conference. The background for the talks is provided by insights from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC), whose recent report shows that global greenhouse gas emissions have increased as a result of population and economic growth. The research results also show, however, that with ambitious climate mitigation measures, global warming can be kept below a threshold of 2oC compared to pre-industrial levels.
The German Federal Research Ministry's Climate-Related Research Activities
Climate research has an important role to play in meeting this objective – not just in Germany, and especially in developing countries and countries in transition, that are often particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. For this reason, the BMBF funds climate research in areas where decisions about dealing with climate change are made. The aim is to close major knowledge gaps and to demonstrate that there are solutions and possibilities when it comes to dealing with climate change. The current edition of Outlook Earth “Climate Change: Time to Act” presents the following BMBF-funded climate research projects:
Doing research with Africa, not just in Africa: the Regional Science Service Centres for Climate Change and Land Management in southern and western Africa are helping to build science infrastructures in regions that are often particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Climate Research above the Amazon Rainforest Canopy: The Amazon rainforest is one of the most delicate ecosystems in the world, while simultaneously playing an important role in maintaining the stability of the global climate. To better understand the importance of the forest, the tallest climate measurement tower in the world has been constructed in the middle of the rainforest.
Cities of the Future: Rapidly growing cities in developing countries and countries in transition need planning structures that are able to adapt equally quickly. The funding measure Rapid Planning develops instruments to provide cities with courses of action to improve city planning.
A Safe Future for Germany's Coasts: How can a sustainable use of the North Sea and Baltic coastlines be ensured in the future, if sea levels are rising and the frequency and intensity of storm surges are increasing? The impact of climate change is being analysed in a variety of scenarios, to develop effective coastal protection measures internationally.
Large Scale Energy Transition: The BMBF's Kopernikus Projects constitute the Ministry's largest energy transition research initiative. With social aspects in mind, new energy systems and concepts are developed to be used for large-scale technological applications.
