Autonomous Driving: A User-Experience Study

Carolin Höll Hochschulkommunikation
Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg

Vehicles with automated driving functions are no vision anymore but can be experienced in daily life in first series production vehicles. But which chances and risks result for the road users from the consumer’s point of view? How are functions of autonomous driving perceived?

These were the research questions during a user-experience study at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Stuttgart (DHBW Stuttgart). The study was accompanied by the Centre for Empirical Research of DHBW Stuttgart and carried out by 21 dual students of the degree program Business Administration - Management in Industry: Industrial Service Management under the direction of Professor Dr. Marc Kuhn.
With the series production vehicles Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Tesla Model S, 200 test drivers (19 – 81 yrs) evaluated dimensions of performance and perception, like safety, driving pleasure and controllability before and after a test drive. Meanwhile, the test persons were encouraged to “Think Aloud” to record the ad hoc associations for the prevailing situations. To see wether the personality of a testdriver has any effect on his opinion, the drivers were categorised according to five common factors of personality.
The results showed that the test drivers rated their ability to operate and use the automated driving functions more positive after the test drive. Especially the adaptive cruise control as well as the lane assistant were rated as very useful.

Comparing the two different vehicle types it turned out that there are extensive differences how they were perceived by the test drivers.
In Summary, the perceptions of the automated driving functions were highly divergent. Whereas some test persons were quite disappointed by the autonomy, others felt as science fiction came true. The expected gain of recreation was not confirmed, since the drivers had to stay focused on traffic all the time.

To conclude, even if the technology is not yet fully matured, the overall perception of the autonomous driving was positive. But, communication of the automated driving functions has to become clearer, to keep expectations realistic.
On June 22th, the results of this user experience study were presented to the public and will be presented in September to representatives of the European-Parliament in Brussels.
