The University of Cologne focuses on applied research, practical relevance and knowledge transfer

Gabriele Meseg-Rutzen Kommunikation und Marketing
Universität zu Köln

The university adopts a holistic transfer strategy that strengthens both application-oriented research and knowledge and technology transfer and actively promotes dialogue between research and society.

The university is presenting its new transfer strategy to make relevant knowledge and research results accessible to society and, in times of societal change, multiple crises and global problems, make a meaningful contribution to their resolution. Transfer will be considered holistically in all areas of the university. Accordingly, transfer is not only a step in the development process from research to practical application, but also encompasses all areas of the academic environment. The transfer strategy therefore covers four fields of action – communicating, advising, applying and training.

These four fields of action result in a variety of transfer measures. For example, the university is focusing on creating and sharing research-based content specifically for the public. Scholars and scientists moreover contribute actively to society by providing expert advice to various committees or helping to develop legislative proposals. In addition to spin-offs or the translation of medical research results into applications for improved diagnostics and therapy, the area of application also focuses on students. The ‘Service Learning’ programme allows participants to collect credit points for their social commitment. The training programme includes, for example, the Cologne Kids and Junior Universities, the guest auditor and senior citizen programme as well as advanced training offers for specialists, such as teachers or managers.

Professor Dr Joybrato Mukherjee, Rector of the University of Cologne, says: “The high societal relevance of the research in our Key Profile Areas and Faculties forms the basis of our transfer strategy. As a comprehensive university, we are committed to actively contributing to society, the economy, politics and culture.”

Professor Dr Werner Reinartz, Vice-Rector for Transfer, adds: “Our strategy is regularly reviewed and adapted in order to respond to social changes and ensure that transfer activities are sustainable. The further development of the transfer strategy is in line with our university strategy and academic excellence.”

Last but not least, the overarching aim of the strategy is to raise awareness of and appreciation for transfer within the university, to build skills, improve processes and measure the effectiveness of activities in order to continuously strengthen transfer to society.
