Dr Ahmed Abd El Wahed, a veterinary scientist at Leipzig University, has been awarded the Scientific Leadership Prize by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) for his research on poverty-related diseases and his commitment to global health. The head of the laboratory at the Institute of Animal Hygiene and Veterinary Public Health was one of four researchers from sub-Saharan Africa and Europe to receive the award this year. The prize was presented on 18 June 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Dr Abd El Wahed is successfully working to combat infectious diseases. Among other achievements, he developed a mobile suitcase laboratory for the rapid detection of various viruses, bacteria and parasites. This innovative solution has been successfully deployed in several African and Asian countries, enabling much faster responses to infectious disease outbreaks than was previously possible.
The researcher has also established international collaborations to fight infectious diseases. He coordinates the African One Health Network for Disease Prevention (ADAPT), a €7 million initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The network aims to combat antimicrobial resistance in sub-Saharan Africa and strengthen local health systems. Dr Abd El Wahed is also a founding member and coordinator of the Horizon Europe Network for Rapid Diagnostics of Emergency Transboundary Infectious Diseases (PREPARE-TID), which focuses on effective crisis management during pandemics and managing disease risks. In addition, he co-founded the Indo-German Partnership for Veterinary Education and Research (InDeVet), a collaboration between leading veterinary institutions in India and Germany. The initiative is dedicated to strengthening veterinary education, research and practice in both countries, and to improving animal and human health.
“I am truly honoured to receive this award, as it recognises the hard work and commitment of my team and our research partners, especially in our efforts to provide rapid diagnostic solutions for remote outbreak areas. It is a privilege to be part of a movement that uses scientific research to serve communities and improve global health,” says Dr Abd El Wahed, who is also active in various organisations, including the research commission of the German Society for Tropical Medicine, Travel Medicine and Global Health (DTG), and the World Health Organization’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (STAG-NTD).
