According to the prestigious Shanghai Rankings, TUM is a global leader in research in several fields. It ranks among the best 20 universities in agricultural sciences, medical technology, remote sensing and robotics. In four other subjects, it makes it into the top 50. In a Germany-wide comparison, TUM ranks first in 22 disciplines – more than any other university.
In the Shanghai Rankings, TUM is among the best 50 universities in the following subjects:

Developed at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, key criteria for the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects are the number and citation rates of papers published, especially in leading journals in the respective fields. It also assesses the degree of international cooperation in the related research. In some areas, the number of major prizes awarded to scientists is also taken into account. These indicators are weighted according to the prevailing culture in the various subject areas.
In other internationally renowned subject rankings, TUM is also among the best universities in several subjects. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, it is ranked 19th in Electrical & Electronic Engineering as well as in Mechanical Engineering.
In the THE World University Rankings by Subject, which evaluates broader subject areas, TUM is ranked 15th in Computer Science and 19th in both Physical Sciences and in Engineering.
